La Torretta is a converted farmhouse overlooking the medieval hilltop
town of Barga and the valley of the Serchio, with the jagged Apuan Alps
beyond.
The house was modernized some 20 years ago, and offers all modern amenities. Chestnut beams lend the main rooms charm. The ground floor, today the spacious kitchen and living room, was once the cantina, used for storing the wine. On the first floor is the main bedroom, with its own shower/loo, the bathroom, and a second bedroom. A third bedroom, ideal for young people, is in the "torretta" (small tower), on the second floor. The nearest hamlet, with a shop and hotel/restaurant, Albiano, is 15 mins' walk from the house; Barga itself is ca 6 minutes in the car. Swimming pools in Albiano & Barga. |

The area has a rich cultural heritage, and every medieval village round
about is worth exploring, e.g. the 1,000-year old Eremo di Calomini
hermitage, clinging to an overhanging cliff. Lucca is 45 minutes away,
and Pisa, Florence and their surroundings can be visited in a day. Ideal
walking & cycle-touring country. Spectacular cavern.
Since the house was first opened to visitors in 1995, none has ever
left La Torretta other than most enthusiastic! It receives many return
visits, e.g. one family came twice from New Zealand, academics from New
Hampshire three times, a German family six times etc. |
